Review A Witch's Guide to Business

Wow, "A Witch's Guide to Business" was a whirlwind! I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting, and I'm still buzzing from the experience. Alex Evans has crafted a truly unique and captivating world in Barramar, a city teeming with life, intrigue, and a healthy dose of the magical. The blend of steampunk elements with a South Asian-inspired setting was simply brilliant – it felt so richly detailed and lived-in, not just a backdrop but a character in itself. I especially loved the little details that brought the world to life; you could almost smell the spices in the air and hear the clatter of the bustling markets.

The dual perspectives of Tanit and Padma were a masterstroke. These two women, so different yet bound by their shared magic and their past, were incredibly compelling. Tanit, the ex-spy with a penchant for violence and brandy, and Padma, the compassionate surgeon and devoted mother, offered such a fascinating contrast. Seeing them navigate the challenges of running their occult business, juggling personal lives with dangerous cases, was both thrilling and deeply satisfying. Their competence, their flaws, and their genuine affection for each other made them instantly relatable and endearing. I found myself completely enthralled by their individual journeys and their dynamic as partners.

The mystery itself kept me on the edge of my seat. From the hexed vampire to the factory full of zombies, the cases were intriguing and cleverly woven into the larger plot. The pacing was fantastic; the story moved swiftly, never letting the momentum flag. Even with the large cast of characters – a detail the author readily acknowledges – I never felt lost or confused. Each character felt distinct, playing a crucial role in the unfolding narrative, even the seemingly minor ones. The way Evans introduced them, gradually unveiling their connections and motivations, was expertly done.

The book isn't without its minor imperfections. As some reviewers mentioned, there were a few typos, and occasionally the narrative felt a bit rushed. However, these minor flaws were easily overshadowed by the overall brilliance of the story. The world-building, the character development, and the compelling plot more than made up for any minor editing hiccups.

The ending, while satisfying, also left me craving more. I'm desperately hoping for a sequel! This book isn't your typical witch story; it's a bold, original take on the genre, blending fantasy, mystery, and a touch of dark humor into a captivating brew. If you enjoy complex plots, strong female leads, and richly imagined worlds, then "A Witch's Guide to Business" is an absolute must-read. It's a thrilling adventure that stays with you long after you turn the final page.
